cathedral quilt love

A number of years ago when I was living on Guam, I came across a pile of old quilt magazines in a favorite used bookstore we used to haunt, and after a quick perusal, bought almost all of them and carted them home. I spent many hours reading and re-reading those magazines, figuring out certain quilting techniques, and even sketching up some of my own ideas of what I would love to try myself someday. It sparked a passion for quilts that never left me, and I knew that it was something I wanted to pursue. Of all of the quilting patterns, methods and such I read about though, there was one that had me absolutely transfixed. Cathedral Window quilts. I was in love.

And dying to figure out how it was done.

Unfortunately the magazines only had gorgeous pictures of finished Cathedral quilts, and no instructions or tutorials on how to make one. Which only cemented the idea more firmly in my head that these quilts must be really, really hard to make.So I fell back to admiration instead of pursuing information on their construction.

We moved back to the states a year later and along the way I ended up losing almost all of those magazines, but I never forgot those pictures of the Cathedral quilts, or how much I loved them. I never entertained the idea that I could ever make one myself though, I made it out to be just too hard I guess. Until I stumbled across a blog this morning that changed all of my previous, and frankly silly ideas. Not only is there ‘a cool picture tutorial on how to make Cathedral Window Quilt squares’, but it’s so thorough and well done that it almost makes it look easy. Easy. I think I actually might be able to do this. Wow. And I also love that this is the kind of project that can be worked on bit by bit over time. So. Very. Cool. So much for convincing myself it would be too hard to make one. Although finding the time is an entirely different story. I still need an apron desperately, have numerous patterns that are beyond cute, gorgeous fabric to make them with, and I still don’t have an apron. Silly me.

  1. It is gorgeous and looks really hard to make. I hope you make one so you can teach me.

  4. How beautiful. Now I want one for my bed! I’m sure to find one in King would be a fun, yet expensive, endeavor!
